Confusion between Furniss and Furness

This excerpt from the family history of the Rocket family of Brotherton illustrates how confusing these two names are.

Anyone who has tried to transcribe hand written records will be aware of the difficulty in telling the difference between the i and e. Very often, it is all a matter of a dot. The census of 1901 has a whole family of Furniss in Hull under the name Furness. Nick Furniss knows. It is his family.
