David Ernst Furniss was born in Hartford, Connecticut on August 30, 1946 to William E. Furniss, MD and Doris I. Furniss.
His father William E. Furniss was born in September 1911 at the American Legation in Porte-au-Prince, Haiti where his father, David's Grandfather, was the U.S. Minister to Haiti from 1905 to 1913. During World War II, David's father was a flight surgeon with the 92nd Bomb Group in the 8th Army Air Force, and was stationed in England for the duration of the war. His parents kept him supplied with 16 millimeter color film -- a rare commodity -- which Dr. Furniss used to record base life and bombing missions. After the war, he moved to Bristol, Connecticut. Bristol remembers Dr. Furniss for his many active years as an obstetrician-gynecologist who ran one of the city's largest practices. He was the first physician trained in this field to come to Bristol Hospital. Dr. Furniss was chief of service in the ob-gyn department at the hospital for 25 years. He also served as the school physician for the Burlington School District and founded the Bristol-Burlington Health District where he served as Health Director from 1973 until 1998. He died in July 2002.
David's mother was born in Auburn, Maine in May 1914 and then lived in Somerville, Massachusetts where her father was the Superintendent of schools. In 1931 she attended Jackson College of Tuft's University where she met her husband who was teaching one of her classes. At 92 years old, she is still alive.
David attended Williston Academy from 1961 to 1964 and then went on to Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. In 1969 he enlisted in the United States Army, and in 1970 he graduated from Bethany with a Bachelors Degree in Economics in absentia while he was in Europe with the US Army. David re-enlisted in 1971 and went to Computer Repair School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After graduation he was sent to Headquarters 5th Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where he cross trained as a Computer Programmer. While there he got a Direct Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserves and after specialized training at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, David was sent to Headquarters United States Army Europe where he worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (ODCSOPS) from 1973 to 1978. During this time David went back to college and graduated with an Associates of Applied Science in Data Processing. After his military service, he took additional Masters Level courses in Computer Science and college courses in Criminal Justice.
In 1978, David got out of the US Army and after developing an Operating System at Honeywell in Phoenix, Arizona he continued to serve his country by working as a Computer Systems Analyst and Systems Developer on many Military Systems including the Multiple Launch Rocket System, the Marine Integrated Fire and Air Support System, the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter, the V-22 Osprey Tiltrotor, the Paladin Howitzer, the Crusader Howitzer and he developed a Communications Simulation System (C3I) to determine bottlenecks in Army Communications Systems. While doing all of that, David also found time as an Entrepreneur to develop an Insurance Agency within PRIMERICA Financial Services (he became a Regional Vice President), a lawn maintenance company, and a dog grooming business. In 1996, David switched to developing Medical Supply Systems for a Hospital and later worked for the Public Health Institute, California Cancer Registry as well as developing Corporate Financial Systems and Health Insurance Computer Systems. David has always been a voracious, eclectic reader and his analytical skills and study of government systems, law, the U.S. Constitution and the Bible make him an asset to his country.
David has three brothers and a sister. David was married to Aysel (Ozcan) Doenmez, a Turkish woman, in January 1971. They resided in Germany where he was stationed with the United States Army. In 1972 they, along with her daughter Nalan, returned to the United States while he attended Computer Repair School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. In March 1973, they had a son William while David was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. After David's tour of duty in Heidelberg, West Germany the family returned to the United States where David was working in Phoenix, Arizona. They were Divorced in 1981. Aysel Furniss died in October 2005 of Lung Cancer. David re-married in July 1982 to Jerre Gayle (Ehler) Matthews while he was working on the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Program at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After 22 years of marriage, they were Divorced in 2004. David is a former member of St. James Episcopal Church and a current member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Perry, Florida 32347
